The Challenge: Overwhelmed by Unstructured Medical Data 

One of Canada’s largest hospitals, a leading provider of digestive health services in Vancouver, manages thousands of patients yearly. Each visit generates extensive documentation within their EMR system, including operative reports, consultation summaries, and prescriptions. As patient volumes grew, manually reviewing these documents became an overwhelming task. The clinic needed a more efficient way to extract and analyze critical patient data without relying on time-consuming manual processes. 

Our Solution: AI-Powered Data Extraction and Analysis 

At Cavallo Technologies, we designed a cutting-edge AI-driven platform using Databricks to convert unstructured medical documentation into structured, searchable clinical data. Our solution includes three key components: 

Intelligent Data Processing with AI 

Leveraging Large Language Models (LLMs) and Optical Character Recognition (OCR), our system automatically extracts essential medical details from various documents, ensuring accuracy and compliance with healthcare regulations. This structured database allows staff to quickly query patient records and generate clinic-wide insights in seconds rather than hours. 

Conversational Access to Medical Data 

We built an intuitive natural language interface powered by Databricks, enabling medical professionals to retrieve data using plain English queries. Instead of manually searching through files, staff can ask questions, and the system generates accurate, real-time responses while maintaining data security and privacy. 

AI Assistant for Rapid Patient Insights 

Our Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG)-powered chatbot acts as a virtual assistant, helping clinical teams quickly access patient-specific information across multiple documents. It can summarize patient history, track treatment progression, and answer key medical queries, reducing administrative workload and improving decision-making. 

Ensuring Accuracy and Compliance 

Using Databricks’ Data Intelligence Platform, our solution enhances efficiency while preserving the accuracy and security of medical data. Through continuous collaboration with medical staff, we refined the system to recognize medical terminology, standardize healthcare codes, and maintain clinical context. Key enhancements included:
